Daniels has also performed and recorded with David Bromberg, a pioneer of the acoustic-meets-rock sound that evolved into what is now commonly referred to as jamgrass.

In the early ’80s, he began hosting all-star after-hours jams at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, giving birth to what became the well-appreciated Nightgrass series at the Telluride festival. His early-’70s group, Magic Music, is often described as Colorado's original jam band, with Daniels singing and picking on multiple instruments, including banjo, mandolin and guitar. Their impact is especially relevant this month, as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a lineup that included Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in addition to its long-running stable of favorites.ĭive into the state's jamgrass roots with these ten bands, organized chronologically:ĭenver resident and bandleader Chris Daniels, of Chris Daniels & the Kings, has long had a foot in jam and acoustic music, going back to the heady days when the Telluride Bluegrass Festival was in its infancy. The following acts, which are all tied to the Centennial State, indelibly carved their names on the flourishing tree of the genre and continue to inspire emerging generations of pickers, grinners and sonic adventurers. Since the early days, when the free-flowing spirit of rock first intertwined with the traditional tones of the hills, a wide variety of artists have worked the bluegrass- and improvisation-rooted genre into unforeseen shapes. The latter is the soundtrack to a Jonathan Demme concert film that’s a terrific introduction to the band.After originating in such places as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, jamgrass music has blazed a storied path through Colorado and beyond. I’ve only ranked their eight studio albums, but they also have a pair of well-regarded live albums, both best heard in their expanded editions – 1982’s The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads and 1984’s Stop Making Sense. The band started out as new wave, but incorporated many other influences – African music on 1980’s Remain In Light, funk on 1983’s Speaking in Tongues, and Americana on their David Byrne-dominated albums from the mid-1980s. The other three members tried to reconvene without Byrne in 1996, releasing the unsuccessful No Talking, Just Head with guest vocalists. The hits continued into the 1980s, with ‘Burning Down The House’, ‘And She Was’, and ‘Wild Wild Life’, The band quietly dissolved in 1988 after recording Naked, officially breaking up in 1991. Their 1978 cover of Al Green’s ‘Take Me To The River’ took them into the US top 30. The Talking Heads released their first album in 1977, featuring Byrne’s edgy ‘Psycho Killer’. The quartet was completed by guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Harrison, formerly a member of Jonathan Richman’s Modern Lovers. The trio played at famous New York club CBGB – for their first gig as Talking Heads in 1975, they supported The Ramones. As the group were unable to find a bassist, Frantz’s girlfriend Tina Weymouth joined – she learned to play bass by listening to Suzi Quatro records.
